Some research about my project

Since I was a child, I can often hear some cries from upstairs on the street downstairs, and those cries sound like singing. Because of the frequent hearing, these cries have been deeply etched in my memory.

But as I grew up, this kind of shouting became less and less, from the beginning of the human voice to the recording, and even the recording was rarely heard later. I hope that such an interesting tradition will not only remain in our memory.

What I want to do this time is to turn the cries of knife sharpeners into music.

This video is the sound of a knife sharpening downstairs in my house that I recorded.

The outfit of the knife sharpener is to look for a bench with two whetstones fixed on one end, one for rough grinding and the other for fine grinding, and a water iron can is tied to the leg of the stool. The other end of the stool is tied with a cushion, and a basket or a box is hung, which contains some simple tools, such as a hammer, a steel shovel, a water brush, a water cloth, and so on. There are many kinds of scissors, long scissors, short scissors, wide scissors, narrow scissors, round scissors, pointed scissors, cloth cutters, tree branch trimmers, steel bar trimmers, haircuts… There are also many kinds of knives, such as skinning knives, Wood chopping knife, kitchen knife, melon knife, paper cutter, bone chopping knife and so on. Knowing the types and uses of scissors and knives, you also need to know how to sharpen them.

“磨剪子嘞~戗菜刀…(Mo Jian Zi Lei, Qiang Cai Dao)” The voice is deliberately long and has a bit of charm. Occasionally, the two kitchen knives in the hand rub against each other. This is the unique and familiar voice that people used to walk through the streets, the sound echoed in the long alleys.
